How to Find a Good Appraiser

An appraisal can dramatically effect the amount and prompt payment of a claim. Be sure that your property is professionally appraised.

Get references — If you or someone you know does not personally know an appraiser, you can call the American Society of Appraisers at 703-478-2228 for a referral to an appraiser in your area.

Clarify fees in advance — The appraiser's estimate should include all relevant documentation and work necessary to provide the appraisal, including document preparation, research, photography/videotaping. Avoid appraisers whose fees are based on a percentage of the appraised value of an object or collection.

Request a sample appraisal — The sample appraisal should contain the name of the client, the date, the purpose of the appraisal, and a detailed description of each item being appraised. It must contain the value of the item and the appraiser's name, address, and signature.
